Lots to discuss today but first of all - it 830pm and it is chilly here low 50s. Enough to pull out some long sleeve shirts and vest.
I'm sitting in the old town which is - from what I have seen so far - is a huge bazaar/souk - however it is divided, like much of the city into Ottoman influence and Austria/Hungarian.
Enjoying a tres leche cake and a latte. I enjoyed another Bosnia coffee with breakfast but I'm not chancing it before bed.
When I arrived, I was starving so I headed it in search of burek with is a crispy pastry filled with meat or cheese and slathered with yogurt. It was a line out the door busy and amazing. I only got a small amount but dinner doesn't seem like an option.
I am staying in a super cool reconstructed Turkish bath/hamam with a dozen rooms. The rooms are all authentic old Ottoman style furnishings and I can't wait to see the hamam. It is open for ladies and gentlemen separately. We can use the steam bath for free and schedule massages for a cost. After I work out some tour details I'm in!
My first impression of Sarajevo is it is a big bustling city. It is very Muslim. (It's even hard to find a beer in the old town) doesn't appear to be as much English spoken. But there is a lot of history to explore. (The hotel is directly across from the Latin Bridge which is where Archduke Ferdinand was assassinated.
I am now in the norther and more mountainous region of BiH, the actual area of Bosnia. (Hence the colder weather). The bus ride from Mostar followed the river through the mountains. It was very scenic. There was a train option as well - not sure it would have been much more scenic - but the timing was terrible and I wanted to get here.
If everything goes to plan tomorrow I will go on a 4 hour Sarajevo Siege Tour. Then I would like to do a walking tour of the city highlights. And I am trying to sort out a trip to Srebrenica.
So it should be a busy week.
Kind of hard to believe it's been a month but then on the other hand. Another month seems like a long time. But one day at a time.
