Mostar Saturday

Today was a fun, low impact day. Although I must say it is hard to use the word 'fun' when you are regularly reminded of the destruction by war.

I went to a cool little bridge view restaurant for a 'taste of the orient' breakfast. Which really means Ottoman Empire orient - not Far East. It is essentially the traditional European breakfast I am used to having but it is all brought to your table and as it is not buffet, it is all much fresher. Breads and croissants, Nutella, jam, cheeses, a very smokey ham, scrambled eggs and grapes. The surprise of the morning was the Bosnian coffee - which is Turkish strong boiled - except you add the sugar at the table.(no milk) I was surprised how much I liked it but I got the jitters from a espresso sized serving.

And we saw a few guys jump from the bridge.

Then I did something new, visited a small mosque but climbed the minaret. 89 stairs in a tight spiral. The view was incredible. The mosque was pretty basic.

I stopped by the Bosnian War Museum. Not light reading. There was quite a bit on Srebrenica which I am hoping to visit in Sarajevo. For today, seeing actual footage of the shelling of the bridge plus some scenes of daily life during the war. The original bridge was 400+ years old and it took many direct hits to bring it down. Additionally the river was not a demarcation line. The Serbs controlled both sides, so the Croats really just wanted to be destructive and vindictive. Sadly so much like Mosel and now Ukraine.

After the jitters wore off, I needed to sit down with a beer and I read for a bit. Then I headed back to the hotel and lounged on the roof deck for while.

There is a little wine shop by the bridge that does tastings, so I am currently enjoying a white, rose, red flight from Herzegovina in the site of the minaret from the morning.
