Saturday was a long day. After the park it was 3hours to Sibernik, which ‘surprise’ is a fortified hill town on the Adriatic. It’s actually charming and not terribly crowded. (But good lord there are a lot of seniors) Check-in to my ‘pansion’ and then undoing and finding real parking was a challenge. The Pansion is just a room in a house. Granted it is a medieval house with two foot stone walls but just a simple room.
[interior Croatia is fairly barren. Farmland around the lakes. And scrubby vegetation with loads of limestone rock likes closer to the coast. The area near Zadar was horribly overbuilt and reminded me of coastal New Jersey. And the Sea Organ was a bit of a disappointment. Glad it wasn’t a huge detour]
Of course there are loads of narrow streets with shutters that I just find amazing. And a cathedral - with a grand wedding - and little squares with bistros and a row of bars along the waterfront.
I watched the sunset with some gin and then wandered into a well-reviewed dining spot for a hood but a bit unusual dinner. They had a lot of rules. Like you needed to listen to your waiter explain the menu concept - huh? Starters and mains - choose one of each. So I chose the marinated anchovies with red pepper mousse the sea bass with pumpkin and veggies.
The anchovies were excellent and I could have had another order - white fish without the oil we are used to eating. The bass was a bit more like an app. Very tasty but small.
Stopped by a little cocktail bar on the way home - Jack Rabbit Slims - and it was off to bed at the pansion!
Slow morning and booked a few things for this week’s island hopping and finally headed out for my version of brunch around noon. I decided as it was Sunday an aperol spritz would be acceptable. Then off up a pebbly beach and a restful afternoon.
[bit of strange situation where I overheard a man approach a young girl and in my opinion become overly friendly and inquisitive. Long story short, he did everything you read about and she did almost everything I don’t think she should have done. Thankfully she refused to share her social media and I turned sideways to them to make it clear I was listening. Very abruptly, he left. I considered saying something to her as I left but I thought perhaps not make it seem worse. The whole tho g made me a little ill.]
Enjoying the sunset before my dinner reservation. I just found out they have the availability -translate ‘extra’ - veal peka. Which is meat that is slow cooked under a brass bell surrounded but hot embers. Another the in the endless variations of a hangi or a clambake or tangine.
