My little hotel is comfy and fine. I found a little beer hall for a flight of local beers and a sausage sandwich for dinner. And then off for a restless night sleep.
Thankfully the sun was out this morning and the hotel breakfast was lovely.
Ljubljana is really small and divided by a small river. It was a 10 minute walk to a very touristy square where I found the free walking tour.
Ljubljana has been part of Austria, Italy and of course, Yugoslavia. It was the first region the leave, and peacefully, in 1991. To my eyes, it evokes everyone’s idea of a typical European town. Baroque architecture, lots of leafy green areas and squares and a cafe culture that isn’t found many places.
The people are incredibly kind and welcoming. (I am trying my Slovenian as much as possible but it is not easy - zdrado = hello) It is also a very youthful city.
At the moment I am perched on a bar stool in a small wine bar, enjoying a flight of orange wines (which are white wines that are stored with the skins on to give a distinctive orange color and strong finish) Orange wines are very popular here. For a snack I am enjoying some burrata with anchovies.
