The Balkans

For those of you who have followed my travels or this blog in the past, you will note that this is one of the most intense itineraries I have planned. (And this was cut back, as it originally was to include the Greek islands and western Turkey!)

The pins on the map are mostly places I have read about somewhere and thought sounded interesting. I let the pins create the general itinerary.

I'll arrive in Ljublana, Slovenia on 8/30 and depart Thessaloniki in northern Greece on 10/31. In between will be stops in the Istrian peninsula of Croatia, the Croatian coast and a few islands, Dubrovnik, Sarajevo, Montenegro, lake Ohrid in Macedonia, and Albania.

While there are a few short stays, I'm trying to do 8 five day long stays and day trip from there. Mostly apartment rentals but a few hotels and even a hostel. Renting a few cars but trying to avoid driving across borders. There are a lot of car service apps - like Uber but for longer distances. And some are even ride shares. And some buses and ferries.

This is all the former Yugoslavia so there is a lot of history to glean. Sounds like great food options and maybe a bit of vino.

Weather should work in my favor as I am moving north to south. Overall the temps are quite like Nantucket. Which was why I always dubbed this the 'retirement trip' as it needs to be done during our summer - but just like us, away from the crazy summer crowds of August. The Albanian coast is scheduled for mid-October, so weather and seasonality may play a factor.

Even though I promised my new friends from the Iraq trip that I would endeavor to be more nomadic. I have much pre-planned or at least researched. (Nothing like arriving in Dubrovnik only to find the best GOT tour was yesterday)

And even though I am calm sitting in my recliner, awaiting my taxi to the airport. The plan, responsibility, head space and nerves all boil up eventually. (I was awake at 3am - luckily I dosed off again). Solo travel is a challenge.  But it is super rewarding in the end.

Lyric from a great Sunday morning coffee playlist

'For one fleeting moment, we are hereThe next one, all is goneThere's nothing in-between but loveThat blink of an eye - is our only timeDon't waste it and pretend that you don't care
I know you do'
