Spent an amazing afternoon touring the soaring rock pillars that are the home to six orthodox monasteries. Why? Solitude, defensiveness and closer to heaven. And Meteora means suspended between heaven and earth - so there's that.
One in particular is built on the flat top of a tall rock. Not an easy task but doable. The others are literally extension of a narrow rock column. And there are no roads. Everything is hoisted up from the floor below. It was amazing to say the least. (And we didn't have to hoof it up as the tour included a little bus.)
The little town of Kalambaka exists to support the tourism of the rocks. But it is fine and refreshingly different from the Balkans.
I hired a private car to bring me to Greece. It was a little bit of a splash out but I really needed to be here for the tour today as I am only here one night. It was three hours and we jumped ahead an hour at the border - which took much longer than I expected but was without incident.
Dinner has been a wonderful fried soft cheese with a homemade tomato marmalade and main course of roast veal with onions and plums. And a 1/2 carafe of local red wine. Lunch was an equally good chicken gyro.
Early start tomorrow for a couple hours on the bus to Thessaloniki. (Not my last bus or hotel as I will overnight in Boston and bus down to the Cape)
