Sumarra, Mitja, Hatra, Mosul - part two

At first blush, Hatra and Mosul could not be more different. Hatra is an ancient city with the Greek influenced Sun Palace. Mosul is a modern northern Iraqi city.

But they were both occupied by ISIS.

In Hatra, the signs were subtle. After all these are ruins of an ancient city. You don't expect the stone floors or columns to be in 'like new' condition. And based on that, it is a remarkable site.

But then you see the bullet holes in the walls and the spent cartridges and the faces of anything not Islamic - chipped off. And you get a different sense of this place.
