Which brings us to Mosul. Fully occupied by ISIS until 2018. The destruction is everywhere. But so is the rebuilding. We were given unprecedented access to the Al Noree mosque which was almost completely destroyed.
The broken marble tiles and upended columns aren't ancient - they were in use - 5 years ago.
There are Christian churches here with the same level of destruction and the same fervor to restore.
And then there are the private homes. Some still not deemed safe of mines.
(There is destruction everywhere. But the old city near the market is probably the worst. There are only 4 hotels in the city. We are on the opposite side of the river, where there is some semblance of normalcy.
