Earthquake update

Ok so here's the situation at the moment.
I awoke this morning in Salta (northwest Argentina) from a long day of driving crazy roads and mountain passes all day yesterday. I was waiting for my tour to Cachi about 170km to the southwest to leave and decided to check the news and saw a report of the quake in Chile. The tour to different but via similiarly windy hairpin turn mountain roads. We arrive in Cachi and are having lunch out on a patio when it feels like my chair has been pushed forward by the house. I'm not sure what it is until the staff come running outside. It quickly stops and we chatter about the quake in Chile. I flip on my phone and read that aftershocks have been felt in Buenos Aires but little other information. After lunch and a walk around we hear that the aftershock we felt was centered near Salta and that it was a 6.1.
We get back on the road without incident until we get within an hour of the city and you see where huge rock piles have been cleared from the roads and others that have yet to be moved. Rocks as big as a car. Because these roads are so narrow to begin with they always have crews (like we have snow plows) always on standby. We get back to Salta and all is well - no damage - everyone is talking about it. Apparently two deaths from collapsed walls in poorly built structures.
Even here there is very little information available on tv. I am actually able to do pretty well with the Spanish crawl and headlines and the pictures speak for themselves. It looks pretty bad especially the roads from Concepcion on the central coast northward to Valparasio on the coast and Santiago.
I leave Salta tomorrow to go back to Buenos Aires for a week. And then I fly to Patagonia for another days.
My plan would have been to cross into Chile in the lakes region near Bariloche and spend some time in Puerto Varas and the island of Chiloe before heading north to the previously mentioned Valparasio and then to Santiago to fly out on April 1.
It is way too early to say what will come of those plans. My intial thought is to somehow get back to Mendoza which is Argentine wine country for the last week and fly out of Buenos Aires. But that is a month away.
I appeciate the emails. But I am well. Keep the people of Chile in thoughts tonight.

Scott - on the shaky road in Salta
