Dancing with the stars - not!

So the late nights caught up with me today (and the teeming rain didn't help) but I have pulled myself off the sofa at 1030 to go for dinner - and I think it was worth it. But first...

Our tango night started at the Alvear Palace Hotel for a cocktail. I think the name says it all - a magnificent grand old hotel! We went to the lobby bar and had a drink there were many other tables enjoying high tea (afterall it was only 7pm) After some conversation - I actually don't know Kevin or John very well - (Kevin is a Sargent with the NPD amd John is principal at the school - and it funny to discuss Nantucket gossip and politics at a bar in Buenos Aires) we headed of to the tango show. It is in an enormous hall but in a very sketchy neighborhood and even our taxi driver tells us not to wander outside around after the show. We were seated in a booth next to the stage. The rest of the floor was seated at long banquet tables. The food was ok - as you might imagine a dinner for 300 would be - but the wine flowed freely and while there was a bit of merchandising of photos and cds etc overall it was a nice meal. I don't know much about tango or Carlos Gardel (the place was named after him) but I thought the show was amazing. It was 1920-40s period costumes thankfully not a sequined and satin and the dancing was broken only by the occasssional song or instrumental number. In our booth by the stage I felt like Carrie Ann, Len and Bruno - but I digress.

There are always the occassional tourist trap - the trick is to find the least "trappy" (and even as the train of motorcoaches filled with Americans pulled away) and I think we succeeded.

The guys were headed to Mendoza today so we decided to visit a flew clubs near their hotel - karaoke or techno. But it was fun.

So the skys are clearing as I enjoy a very good steak just around the corner from the apartment. I am hoping for a good day of touring tomorrow before heading to Salta in the northwest on Wednesday.
Buenos noche!
