After our trip south, we are now back in Baghdad for two nights before heading north. (We are in the same hotel but the WiFi is terrible this time around)
It was an interesting day with our initial excursion to the heavily fortified Green Zone which currently home to all government office, embassies and the the US compound. We could not stop and it is hard to take pictures of much but I did manage the famous Crossed Swords arch.
No question today, saw the biggest military presence and went through more and the most thorough checkpoints. But with that said, we got around fairly easily and have always felt safe.
I found out today, that Derek and our local guide, keep in daily contact with the FIIS - Federal Iraqi Intelligence Service - and they know where we are, all the time.
We also toured the Iraqi Museum which was infamously looted after the 2003 fall of the government. It was an interesting tour as it helps to put some of the pieces together - like our visit to the archeological site of the ancient city of Babylon and the Ishtar Gate (replica pictured) which now lives in Berlin. However some glazed tile pieces also exist here. (Sorry no Hanging Gardens to see)
