Frenetic Saturday at the Market

[note: since I can't seem to embed the photos into the story, I will endeavor to put them in order so you can follow along]

After a fitful night of trying to sleep, we got an early-ish start for the old city and the markets/souks.

Today"s old historic city was the city center back before independence in 1959. Today it is a mass of narrow streets set along the crumbling architecture and clogged with cars, scooters and push carts. And it is the primary market place for everything you might need. It is organized by item - clothing, copper, leather goods, stationary, books etc. and amid the jumble are street food and tea and juice stands.

Our small group took a leisurely wander and we were as much on display as the goods for sale. Everyone we encountered were remarkably curious and friendly. There was never a hint of animosity. Arabic and broken English mixed with enough smiles to let us know we were more than welcome.

Our first stop was a snack break with some lovely kebbeh which is ground beef stuffed inside a bulgar wheat meatball boiled and served with a lamb broth. And of course flat bread. I have had them elsewhere and ever tried to make them at home - delicious!
